Breaking Bread with Prosperity Kitchen and Pantry at the Virginia Beach Wine Bar

There’s just something about bread that makes it go perfectly with a glass of vino.

The two also have a few things in common.

Both are hand-crafted – think of a vintner picking grapes and a baker kneading dough – and both are derived from yeast.

Clay Hale, manager of The Williamsburg Winery’s Wine Bar in Virginia Beach’s La Promenade Shops, knew he wanted high-quality breads for the bar’s sandwiches and charcuterie boards, so he went searching for the best product he could find.

Turns out, he didn’t have to look too far.

Prosperity Kitchen and Pantry, located off Virginia Beach Boulevard, opened its doors in November 2018. It was the brainchild of Kevin Jamison, who owns Commune – a restaurant known for its fresh, locally-sourced menu items, and his head baker Ishiah White.

Hale had heard of Prosperity Kitchen and Pantry and knew they had a great reputation in the community.

“Bread is an art – it’s a time-consuming thing,” said Hale. “We wanted to work with a local business making the region’s most high-quality bread.”

A Virginia-Beach native, Hale said there are so many great products and services that can be found right here in Hampton Roads.

“I believe the whole area is extremely diverse and there’s a lot of talent here, and not just food products,” he said.

The Williamsburg Winery makes a point to work with local businesses, including artists like Reba McConell, who painted the Virginia Beach Wine Bar’s wall mural and designed the canned Rosé graphic, to Twisted Sisters Cupcakery, who created wine-inspired cupcakes for the Wine Bar.

“We try to connect with and elevate as many local businesses as possible,” said Hale. “Working together gives them, and us, great exposure.”

White said she was thrilled when Hale reached out to her.

“We’ve been making bread for The Williamsburg Winery’s Virginia Beach location since they opened,” said White. “They could get bread from anywhere, but they chose to support a small business.”

A couple of times a week Hale will stop by Prosperity Kitchen and Pantry to pick up fresh bread. Currently, the bakery provides bread for all of the Wine Bar’s sandwiches and for its charcuterie boards.

Customers can enjoy a potted cheddar served with challah, an Edwards Cherrywood Smoked Bacon sandwich on sourdough, a turkey and brie on baguette as well as a River Oaks Farm Chicken on ciabatta, among others.

And don’t forget dessert! In addition to fresh-baked breads, Hale and White also worked together on a wine-infused chocolate truffle that features Vin Licoreux de Framboise (raspberry wine).

The Wine Bar in Virginia Beach is open five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday.
